Chlorine

Chlorine is a chemical disinfectant added to tap water to kill harmful microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and parasites. But it can:

• Dry out skin and hair
• Affect taste and smell
• React with organic matter to form byproducts (like THMs), which are regulated but still something many people prefer to reduce.

Chloramine

Chloramine is a bi-product of chlorine and ammonia used for further mains disinfection. Unlike chlorine it doesn't evaporate, and it's harder to remove with basic carbon filters. Reducing chloramine needs a catalytic carbon filter built specifically for it, which is why our Whole House system runs a dedicated chloramine reduction filter at Stage 3.

PFAS

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of synthetic "forever chemicals" used in non-stick cookware, waterproof fabrics, food packaging and firefighting foam. They don't break down in the environment or in the body. Studies have linked long-term PFAS exposure to:

• Hormonal disruption
• Raised cholesterol
• Reduced immune response
• Certain cancers (still being studied) Standard council water treatment isn't designed to remove them.

Microplastics

Microplastics are plastic fragments smaller than 5mm. They shed from synthetic clothing, packaging, road wear and the breakdown of larger plastics, and have been detected in tap water, bottled water and human blood. Concerns include:

• Carrying other chemicals and bacteria into the body
• Inflammation in the gut and airways
• Long-term build-up effects (still being studied) Standard municipal filtration isn't fine enough to catch them.

Heavy Metals

Heavy metals like lead, copper and mercury enter water through old pipes, soldered joints and industrial run-off. Even at low levels, long-term exposure can:

• Affect brain development in children
• Damage kidneys and the nervous system
• Build up in body tissue over years Lead is a particular concern in older Melbourne homes with pre-1990s plumbing.

Herbicides & Pesticides

Herbicides and pesticides are agricultural and garden chemicals that wash into rivers, dams and groundwater, the same sources our drinking water is drawn from. Long-term exposure has been linked to:

• Hormonal disruption
• Nervous system effects
• Certain cancers Treatment plants reduce them but don't remove them entirely.
